Barred Owl Movement – LIVE

Below are day-by-day locations of GPS-tagged barred and sparred (barred X spotted hybrid) owls in the northern Sierra Nevada, California. The tags, which weigh just 17 grams, periodically record nighttime foraging locations and daytime roost locations, and upload them via satellite. We have deployed the tags as part of the larger Strix monitoring project; understanding barred owl movement as they expand their range into the Sierra Nevada will help us more effectively monitor and manage their population.

This page will be updated periodically as more birds are tagged and locations are received. A larger version of the map is available here. All locations have been offset for the safety of the birds.
