General Inquiries

If you’re interested in joining the team, please send Connor your CV and a brief description of how our research interests overlap. Graduate and postdoctoral positions are contingent upon funding, which is generally provided by an existing project.

Prospective Postdocs

As noted above, most openings are contingent upon funding. However, there are several pathways for applicants interested in designing their own research project.

  1. The Rose Postdoctoral Fellowship Program is sponsored by the Lab of Ornithology and is open-ended: applicants propose a project, and these are reviewed by a rotating committee of Lab staff. Proposals can entail fieldwork, can leverage an applicant’s dataset, can engage with an existing dataset (the Sierra Nevada bird community dataset is particularly extensive), or take some other form. It is beneficial to contact prospective sponsors prior to submission. Typically four Rose fellowships are offered each year.
  2. The Christopher W. Clark Postdoctoral Fellowship is sponsored by the Yang Center and is focused on conservation bioacoustics. This is a new program, and opportunities may be fairly specific to a region or technological domain, as opposed to the completely open-ended Rose program.
  3. Other opportunities that support open-ended postdoc support include the Smith Fellowship (offered by the Society for Conservation Biology for U.S.-based work), and the Atkinson Fellowship (offered by Cornell University).

Cornell Undergraduates

Opportunities are evaluated on a case-by-case basis, and we have a very good record of securing funding for student projects (e.g., the Lab of Ornithology’s Experiential Learning Grants and CALS Undergraduate Grants). Prior coursework in ecology is required; familiarity with program R and willingness to make a minimum three-semester commitment is preferred. Examples of past student work are available here. You are welcome to contact me via email (preferred) or through my Cornell-linked ForagerOne profile.
